UPDATE: County clerk refuses to release records to paper saying it endangers the public. Im glad at least one person in NY has some balls and common sense.

I saw this in the headlines but didn't care enough to read about it in depth. Was there ever any argument offered as to why they publicly listed gun owning residences? I just don't get the purpose of it.
