Snake, this i'snt a thread about ethics or the .308. Ive taken well over 100 deer in my life with 30.40 , .35 .32 6.5 Norma and now 30-06. Also took 45 with various bows. Currently have a Wicked Ridge Invader crossbow. My mission is not to put the .22 on pedestal but to take it to the wood shed and prove the myths one way or another. Today all over the internet there those who tout the .22 as the end all rifle. I don't agree. Then there are those who think that the .22 is nothing but a glorified pellet gun. I don't agree with them either. I deal with facts not fiction. So we set out two years ago to dispel the myths once and for all. Take a good long look at the exit hole in that deer head. Let it sink in. Once you except it things change. Very few shooters are aware of just how much penetration power(certain .22 rounds ) are capable of.

So if you like the .308 (I like the 30-06 better) then start a thread about them. Ill be glad to chime in on facts I know about the round. Im going to show you all some things about the .22 you most likely do not know. That is the purpose of this thread.

Now next bit of fact. You all have the proof in front of you that a 40 grain solid standard velocity .22 thunderbolt will go all the way through a deer head at 30 yards. The bullet expanded to .36 caliber and really did a nice job on contact with bone. The second video showed an entirely different round (the CCI Velocitor) The velocitor is 40 grain hollow point with higher velocity starting at 1435 fps. At 300 yards this bullet is still traveling at 835 fps. What we learned here proved something very interesting.

When the Velocitor or Stinger or even the Aguila are shot from hand guns the velocity is severely reduced at the muzzle. The velocitor only makes 810 fps from a hand gun, the Stinger barely 900 and the aguila almost 1000. Now note the bullet fragment in the 300 yard shot. That hollow point splayed right out. Pistols shooting these high end Hollow points get not only good penetration with them but good expansion and last but certainly not least THEY DONT OVER EXPAND. Shot from rifles at extreme close range these same bullets explode on impact and do not penetrate well at all. This was a hard pill to swallow for a lot of guys who think the hyper rounds make their 10-22 Rugers into capable defense rifles. So the rule is for best performance in penetration and stopping power pistols should use the hyper ammunition and rifles standard solid lead until you start shooting outside of 100 yards. Today there many many new rounds available for the .22. I shoot everything from the little CCI shorts (29 grain bullet at 710 fps) which is perfect squirrel round to the 40 grain Velocitor and stinger for Coyotes. Never lost a coyote with a velocitor to the lungs. My set ups for coyote are 50 yard shots. At that range the Velocitor is still making about 1200 fps and the bullet goes in and dumps its energy blowing the lungs up. I am still learning to film hunts but will share a coyote hunt using the .22 velocitor this coming winter.

Again this video. This guy proves that at 300 yards with chart and shooting. CCI Velocitor still has pistol velocity at 300 yards. 835 fps. Penetration and bullet expansion excellent. Hitting a target at 300 yards makes it pretty impractical to actually use a .22 at this range for anything like hunting or defense but does prove the lethality out past the accepted 100 yard limits most put on the round.

here is another test at 440 yards. I like his statement. A .22 will kill at much further distances then you can shoot one accurately.
