A few of the science forums I hang out in have been buzzing about this. Sadly no one seems to have the inside running on what the discovery actually is.
My gut feeling is direct evidence of previous life, or some complex organic compound found in the soil. A growing mystery over the last few years is where is all the methane coming from. Methane is short lived and an extremely active marker for biological processes...... so fingers crossed this could be the BIG one

they started collecting soil samples a few weeks ago so i'd put money on bacteria or complex organic molecules
