Absolutely. Need more people like that.
Do a google search and limit the results to before the riots started. Tons of articles on this.
A bunch of people were too lazy to pay attention before it got dramatic so now they think riots are needed to draw appropriate attention. Don't absolve yourself of responsibility like that. It's your job to stay informed. You shouldn't need rioters to do your legwork for you.

in many respects "police abuse" is a local issue. it might happen in many places but in the end it's a much more local problem. when i look up "minneapolis police abuse", for example, i find an article about fining the city because an off duty police officer started fights in bars. my point here is that while perhaps new york would have covered the balitomore incident alot (because of new york's own problems with police recently), the whole country isn't new york so it's not necessarily something many would see. yes, riots push it to national stage but protests are local. and i don't think that's bad that protests for these things are local because it's a local issue with local cops locally abusing the local community

still just being reported as a "black man dies in police custody after spinal injury" with a strong implication of accident, not "black youth looks at cops, is arrested for looking at cops and then running away (ie arrested for not doing anything), and dies during routine police torture that has resulted in serious injuries in the past and over 50 million dollars in legal pay-outs."
the riots are giving the print media the opportunity to dig a little deeper.

catching sight of cops and running is like running away when you see a bear
