Chick-Fil-A To End Anti-Gay Donations, Huckabee Am Cry

Postby The Dude » Wed Sep 19, 2012 3:12 pm

Chick-fil-A has pledged to stop giving money to anti-gay groups and to back off political and social debates after an executive’s comments this summer landed the fast-food chain smack in the middle of the gay marriage debate.

The Civil Rights Agenda, which dubs itself the largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy group in Illinois, said Chick-fil-A agreed in meetings to stop donating to groups such as Focus on the Family and the National Organization for Marriage. Such groups oppose same-sex marriage.

A report from LGBT advocacy group Equality Matters found that between 2003 and 2009, Chick-fil-A donated more than $3 million to Christian groups that oppose homosexuality. In 2010, the fast food company gave nearly $2 million to such causes, according to the report.

The LGBT collective said the Atlanta-based restaurant chain also sent a letter, signed by its senior director of real estate, to Chicago Alderman Joe Moreno.

Chick-fil-A said in the missive that its nonprofit arm, the WinShape Foundation, “is now taking a much closer look at the organizations it considers helping, and in that process will remain true to its stated philosophy of not supporting organizations with political agendas,” according to TCRA.

Moreno helped fan this summer’s controversy, after Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy said his company was “guilty as charged” of supporting the biblical definition of the family unit. Moreno, who runs Chicago’s trendy Northwest Side ward, said he would block the chain from opening shop in his area.

Now, according to the Chicago Tribune, Moreno has softened his stance and will allow Chick-fil-A in.

The restaurant firm may have helped mend the relationship by also promising to amend an official company document to reflect that its “intent is not to engage in political or social debates,” according to TCRA.

The document, called “Chick-fil-A: Who We Are,” will also state that the chain will “treat every person with honor, dignity and respect -- regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation and gender.” The company took a similar stance this summer, as politicians, celebrities and customers around the country began taking sides.

Outside of that statement, Chick-fil-A spokesman Jerry Johnston said the company is “not offering any response” to the news from TCRA.

“Chick-fil-A has taken a big step forward," said Anthony Martinez, TCRA’s executive director, in a statement. “We are encouraged by their willingness to serve all people and ensure their profits are not used to fight against a minority community that is still trying to gain full and equal civil rights.”

Now, the group wants Chick-fil-A to put in a corporate anti-discrimination policy to address complaints about a “culture of discrimination within the company,” it said.

Good on Chick-Fil-A for turning around, even if it's financially motivated (perhaps due to lack of sales).

I am loving how the anti-gay (I do love how there is still specifically anti just being a homosexual is still a live position) is slowly loosing a grinding war of attrition.

A major even private (like Chick-fil-A is) company trying to make some sort of absurd 'moral' stand might as well equate to 'who wants to do on a stupid crusade at the cost of a couple quaters worth of descent profit'?

Why? Gay (as in the LGBT) people demographically are probably only something like 4-8% (probably always have been). Given however, that most straight people tend to have roughly 15 or so friends. The demographic section of people who know a gay person they think highly of and see no reason to persecute, is a hell of a lot higher. Soon as it became ok to be openly gay generally in the western world during the 1980'ies, this war was lost.

As a side note, you want to see another hilariousness battleground of the war on gays, check the Scottish gay marriage thing out, catholic church, very sad panda.

Chik-fil-a needs to open two new stores in Chicago so it issues a letter. They get their 2 new stores. And all the weirdos clap. But not one mind was changed at corporate or amongst their 97% hetero clientele. Just window dressing over a bandaid. All is well.

I just don't get why anyone cares about gay/not-gay. The ONLY difference between gays and heteros are what they do in the bedroom at night. They hold the same jobs, are members of the same religions, go to the same restaurants, etc. Everything is the same, except what they do with the thing between their legs.

I don't care what ANYONE does with the thing between their legs, be they man, woman, gay, or hetero. It's none of my business. And, I just can't figure out why anyone else cares.

I doubt that Chick-fil-a was hurting on sales. Every time I see one that is open, it has a line. Doesn't matter what time of day.

You can't take one and extrapolate for the whole. There are McDonalds that are very busy and some that are not.

I'm not arguing that they are losing money, of course, just put it out there that even if that's why they changed their mind, I'm fine with that.

This is a tangent, but I have to say this....

I understand what you are trying to say here, but I really hate the "the only difference is what you do in the bedroom" line. What that does is boil being gay (and straight) down to solely sex. There is a bigger difference that needs said - the gender of the person each falls in love with. You can be straight, and you can be gay, without ever doing anything with what is between your legs. What we do in the bedroom and who we fall in love with are both ways to define someone as gay or straight.

(Sorry...pet peeve...had to address).

Its sad that a restaurant is ridiculed for being anti-gay, but nobody cares if you're pro-gay. Why is that?
"Police protection" is an oxymoron. Gun laws are like masturbation, they both feel really good, but after you're done you realize you haven't accomplished anything."
