I think Obama has a mixed legacy, but I really do appreciate some things about his Presidency.

Here is something to be considered: how much worse off would the country have been if Clinton had won in 2008?

The difference between those two scenarios is the value that Obama provided, and I think that difference is noteworthy. While Obama did alot of things I disagreed with, he did it in a calm, respectable manner, and his demeanour was that of professionalism and grace. America had just come off a vicious terrorist attack, a brutal set of wars, and then the Great Recession hit - leadership is important in that context. Having an incompetent leader who can't inspire calm and confidence among most people would have had very real negative impacts for the country. A Clinton Presidency would have made things exponentially worse, and McCain/Romney represent the corporate-teat-sucking side of the Republican party, so they also would have made things worse.

In addition, Obama had some very positive achievements, even though their longevity is in question:

1. Pardoned over a thousand non-violent drug offenders.
2. Made the federal government largely back off states that legalized marijuana.
3. Normalized relations with Cuba.
4. Moved towards normalizing relations with Iran.
5. Oversaw the rapid expansion of green energy, all while moving towards energy independence.

There is more, but generally speaking, I am glad that you guys had Obama as President for the time you did. The alternatives were MUCH worse, although I realize that saying "He was the least terrible" isn't exactly a glowing review.

he was elected as the first black president and race relations are at lows not seen in generations. i do put part of that with him, because he could have been "cool, calm, calculated" like you claim but he wasn't when it came to race issues, he was divisive. you're right that f**k racist f**k on the right and left have gone off the deep end but we had an opportunity with obama and i think a lot of that was wasted. perhaps i put too much on him, but had he ignored the issues entirely i would have said he didn't do anything wrong. instead he got into local matters and made them national ones, fueling racial divisions.

Obama's "if I had a son" speech set off a firestorm of terrible racial events.

When the answer was quite simple and rather obvious: Don't attack armed people.

That has zero to do with race.
