Also you want features and ideas that increase discussion, not inhibit iit or slow it down. I don't think moderated posts would work well.

I prefer quality over quantity.
Moderator screening each reply doesn't inhibit discussion in the slightest. It inhibits useless discussion full of one liners, personal attacks, trolling etc.

Can you do an alert thingy for when someone responds to one of your posts with a link to said response? I've seen such a thing on other forums, kinda nice.

What if you can create an username without an email? You choose a username and it's active for 5 days if you log on with the same IP. If you want to permanently keep that username or log in elsewhere then you need an email. It brings somewhat of an identity to the discussion but without too much commitment.
