I suspect many of us at this forum have a fairly clear picture of the how/why for the confounding rise of Trump, but I came across this article on The Guardian that spelled it out at length (it's not a short article). I came across this article since the writer is a Dallas author who's been penning a few pieces in the Guardian this political season.
I thought it was very well researched, especially when applied to the context of the last 50 years or so.

Hillary Clinton is easily more corrupt than Trump, by a long shot. She is probably the single most corrupt candidate in thirty years.
