They stated it would literally be impossible for increased economic activity to make up the difference as well
In a world where we Americans have our cake and eat it too we'll just add more to the debt and not care. Since we're all keynsians now debts don't matter right? It was the danger of this thinking long ago
What they should do is change laws so that every new social program has to be funded completely by new taxes, and have sunset clauses worked in that mandate new taxes to be enacted or the entire thing repealed if it doesn't meet that mandate every 20 years. Then we'll actually have to get back to reality and talk about the fiscal implications of things and not just scream at each other about everything ad nauseum
