hacking allows russia to directly impact the economy and infrastructure of the west while not directly attacking us, so it seems like the perfect maneuver

I agree with the FBI Director's assessment that this is a 9/11 level threat and they need to be addressed. it is quite clear that the go-it-alone cybersecurity that corporations have is not enough. we need to be able to protect the entire west, public and private alike, from the threat of these hacks. the number one way to do that is to share information on hacking attempts. private institutions do not want to share this information, but f**k em, they need to. we need to coordinate with everybody, across national boundaries, so all our allies remain strong and don't have something crippled in their nation because of a ransomware attack.

secondly, we need to hold these pariah states to account. they cannot hide behind the idea that it was just some criminals in their country doing this. it's criminals in their country doing this to other countries, and this should be viewed as condoning it. the risks to these hackers needs to be far higher than they currently are. they have basically no risk and get high rewards. by pressuring the government that they are launching their attacks from, we pressure the hackers.

These are actually state sanctioned and supported. Russia and China hide behind the facade that these are criminal organizations operating in their countries but it's been shown numerous times that not only are the Chinese and Russians turning a blind eye to these issues but they're actually supporting them directly and indirectly. It's a new front of asymmetrical warfare that we have not yet decided to counter in any meaningful manner. Recall that IP theft was and likely is still rampant with the direct support of chinese military hackers.

It's a tricky issue but in order to effectively counter the threat we need buy in from all members of the G7 to present a unified front in order to back up any concerns that a response in kind to these could trigger a hot war.

of course they are state sponsored and supported. they are just hiding behind the idea that they aren't. that's why they must be held to account irregardless of what they say.

trying inclusion with these countries doesn't work. we abysmally failed on this. now we have massive IC in china and have to quickly build that up here so we can cut ties, which we have to do. russia, we don't really have any reliance on russia for anything so f**k em, we can corner then pretty easy. the germans will fall in line that's what they do, f**k their natural gas line, and it's not like russia can afford to cut them off anyway.

To be fair...having critical infrastructure physically isolated from these sorts of attacks shouldn't be such a crazy idea.

How do you isolate an entire grid while maintaining the increased functionality/efficiency of computerized systems?

You don't. You lose some efficiency and gain some security. At least I imagine so. Not my wheelhouse. But it is frustrating that the default condition seems to be that we are all bent over a log and just waiting for it.

The Republicans are working with Russia, states such as UAE and Saudi Arabia, Israel, etc. to attack various Western assets. It is warfare, Dems somehow still haven't figured it out yet. There is an open international coalition of dictatorships, failed states, fascists (Republicans and international conservatives) and mafia that exists solely to extract profit from the US federal government, while destroying its ability and will to protect itself. It primarily works through propaganda, but also includes direct attacks on US infrastructure and troops.

It is very difficult to do anything when one of two political parties is engaged in treason.
