Looks like MS is pulling another 180 with Xbone

Looks like MS is pulling another 180 with Xbone

One of the most oft-cited displeasures with Microsoft's Xbox series of consoles is the restriction of content to non-Gold users. At current, those looking to watch videos on streaming services like Netflix or Hulu have to pay for an Xbox Live Gold subscription in addition to the normal subscription fees for those services. But this may soon change: According to sources from ArsTechnica, Microsoft could be lifting the paywall on Netflix and Hulu and allowing anyone to access the services without a Gold subscription.

If you're a part of one of the 30 million subscribing households who use Netflix, you may finally be able to ditch the computer and start watching on the big screen. But this may not hold true for every service, as sources also say that Microsoft could put other services behind a subscription paywall to compensate -- including preexisting apps and upcoming TV series from Xbox Entertainment Studios.

At current, Microsoft competitors Sony and Nintendo offer free access to Netflix and Hulu without a subscription, which has left Xbox in the dust. According to a 2011 Nielsen report, while nearly 50 percent of all Netflix users viewed on a console, only 12 percent opted to use an Xbox 360 for the task. With the potential removal of their subscription paywall, Microsoft could significantly bridge the gap and fulfill their long-lusted potential as a home media kingpin.

I don't know if there's a list of 180s MS has pulled since their original Xbox One announcement but I'm thinking that list is pretty long right now. I guess its good that they are learning from mistakes but its sad that they made so many mistakes from the get-go. They tried to pull a Diablo 3 and tell customers what they want instead of listening to the customers and getting the ideas from them.

too little too late. i bought a roku because of the bullshit XBL gold subscription and i'm not going back. anyone that planned on streaming netflix on their tv but didn't want to buy live time has already done the same. this will affect almost no one.

You thought that was a 180? Check this out:

Now I might even buy one, once there is software to warrant it.

I wouldn't really call it a 180 perhaps because they bundled it originally to make Gold more attractive. For years the top streaming devices were consoles for Netflix, Hulu, etc. Now that they have geared the Xbox 360 and the Xbox one into a living room entertainment device they can't justify the price when there are smaller competitors that don't cost as much. Now it seems they are simply adjusting it to be more competitive while allowing you to pay for premium gaming. Times change, and Microsoft's biggest problem to date was never embracing change, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer are basically to blame for that. Lets hope they continue making better decisions from here on out.

I think the problem is they were trying to force change. Trying to get people excited about gaming by speaking to a machine and waving their hands around. They bundled with Kinect because they wanted Kinect to be the standard. It was the selling point of the whole system...and it was a mistake because it forced them to compromise the rest of the hardware. Nintendo made the same mistake with the Wii U...a silly gimmick tablet controller that forced them to compromise the rest of the box.

People don't want this newfangled crap. They don't want a silly giant tablet controller, and they don't want to wave their hands around and talk to their games. They just want good software and hardware powerful enough to run it.

Kinect is something that probably wowed the old men in a MS boardroom. So they decided to make it "a thing" and spend years dumping money into it...which then forced them to try to make something worthwhile out of it...despite serious gamers not giving the first shit about such a silly gimmick when a simple controller was 100 times better. They were trying to pull a Jobs and show people something they didn't know they wanted until they saw it. Which doesn't work for anyone but Jobs. We'll just keep throwing Kinect at people and eventually they'll learn to like it!

Its not even about premium gaming, since of course that is the exclusive province of PC gaming. Consoles are about cheap and simple.

Now they are going back to the old school idea of a box with a controller that you plug into a TV that doesn't break the bank. Which is a massive improvement over trying to force all this unwanted change onto everyone.

Putting paid services like Netflix behind a paywall was simple greed and arrogance.

the reason why the Wii won the console wars of that generation (no, they did, i know the games were not as great and whatever sony fanboi shit you're gonna say it doesn't matter because nintendo still won http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mi ... e_consoles ) WAS because of a gimmicky controller. why wouldn't they do it again? the reason xbox 360s sales kicked up at the end of it's life WAS because of kinect. why wouldn't they do it again?

I don't blame them for wanting to continue the Kinect, but it was making it mandatory that was retarded. I really doubt the Kinect is going to be relevant much longer seeing as they are dropping it completely from new packages. There have been only a couple of really good games for it and unless something really big comes out for it soon, I doubt we'll see much more for it. Could be they are working on a NextGen type thing, I dunno but I just don't see how its going to be a thing. The couple of dance games were really the only things it had going for it. Everything else was just gimmicky (and we'll not mention the atrocity that was Star Wars).

Game streaming may be a thing before long but I don't know that the console has enough power to do that very well coupled with playing the game.

I just don't see it sticking around unless they do something really big that can't be done with a BT microphone.

Yeah but part of the problem is that Gold should have been attractive without. Sony is doing subs right with free games to play and such each month. You have to offer something to the members subbing that they can't get from something else like a Roku or computer.

As long as they are learning from their mistakes, that can only be a good thing for consumers. But it doesn't change the fact that they made a bunch of piss poor decisions with the Xbone.
