Just curious as I am switching all our tablets to Lubuntu here in the next few weeks - are there certain programs you are referring to or something else? I just want to make sure I'm not overlooking something glaringly obvious lol

Just certain programs.. Nothing big... The main complaint I have with Ubuntu 12.04 is it's finicky at times with wireless connectivity..

When I travel if I bring that Win 7 laptop I will use Win 7 exclusively.. 12.04 at times is just a PITA wirelessly. Even here at home, it'll work, it'll work, then the 9th time or whatever I open the lid and bring it out of stand-by it won't connect to my home network, and I have to re-boot..

I do not know if 13 and 14 are as finicky. This desktop with 14.04 isn't wireless.

I think you'll be fine with Lubuntu..

We seem to have forgotten the original Kinect set the world record for the fastest selling consumer electronics product.

Not that it wound up doing them any good. Its been hobbling them pretty badly these days.

I'm not sure I see the relevance.

You're right - they sold a lot of them, and then did nothing meaningful with it after. They aren't getting subscription or "mailbox" money for those units so...that means they need to do something to make people want it and use it and for people to keep buying them. They aren't doing that. They just tried to force people to have them and that isn't working out so well. Consumers need a reason to want or have the item, and that is missing entirely at this point.

14.04 is running so frinkin good on this desktop I haven't bought Win 7 yet, and I think I'm going to save the $80 and just use 14.04 and Mint on this desktop.

They are running flawless. I've used Linux for years, but they seemed to have really hit the jackpot with 14.

Kinect void of any mention at E3 yesterday during Microsoft's presentation. No games, no apps, no nothing.

Sept 30th MS is releasing it's Technical Version of Win 9... Retail release suppose to be in the Spring of 2015..

Word is MS is so desperate to make Win 8 go away they will be offering free, yup, FREE upgrades to Win 9.. To help make XP finally go away they may even offer upgrades from XP to Win 9 for $20.. Even though I have no idea how that will work, I can't imagine a computer that's running XP being able to run Win 9.. But we'll see.

Good riddance to Windows 8: Microsoft will unveil Windows 9 next month

After months of leaks and hints, Microsoft is finally prepared to unveil the next version Windows. The Verge reports that Microsoft will hold a press event on September 30th to officially announce Windows 9 and discuss details of the upcoming release. Microsoft is expected to launch a preview version of the new OS on the same day or in the first days of October, following earlier reports from ZDNet which pegged the same dates for the release.

The technology preview will allow developers and consumers alike to test out some of the new features of Windows 9, including the return of the Start menu and possibly an early version of Cortana for PC. We’ve seen some of the UI alterations in leaks over the past few months, but there’s no telling what will have changed since the early developer builds.

We know that the next major version of the operating system will likely be called Windows 9, but according to The Verge, Microsoft won’t give the new release a name at the press event. Microsoft will instead focus on the new features of the Threshold update and the release of the technology preview. The long national nightmare is finally over for Windows 8 users — Windows 9 is on its way.

I still haven't figured out exactly why people hate Window's 8 so much. I'm running it on everything right now and honestly I don't think my employees could tell the difference between windows 8 desktop mode and windows 7 if I didn't tell them other than you have to go to a slightly different place to shut your machine down.

I wonder what the free upgrade path is? Only free as an upgrade from 8? What about 7?

Doesn't matter, 7 is pretty much perfect. 9 will have to be pretty great to get me to switch.

And Win, I dunno about others, but my problem with 8 is fundamental to it trying to be both and tablet and desktop OS at the same time. If they'd have just given me the option of turning off all of that tablet crap (Metro, full screen apps, the lack of a start button and quick search ability etc etc) and just let me use it as a desktop OS, I'd grumble but probably be fine with it. But....they are trying to FORCE us to use all of this awfulness, and I resent that.

It sounds like 8 is extremely stable, and light on resources, and that's great. But the interface is just a massive turn off. Annoying. Very very annoying.

Sounds like 9 will have windowed apps that run on the desktop, instead of going full screen, but if they aren't willing to completely remove Metro, or at least give me the option of shutting it off, then I'm really not very interested.
