SpaceX Unveils Dragon 2

SpaceX Unveils Dragon 2

Video from : old youtu.be

Its amazing...too amazing, really, but Musk still has a lot of cred.

I'm still waiting to see a booster soft land on the ground, much less a manned ship.

well the russians threatening to no longer ferry americans to space means there is all the more reason to get these operational as soon as possible. but really, russia realizes they are losing all their clout here and will be sidelined. they can't keep up and the only thing they had was their rockets from a bygone age that mattered the smallest of bits. now paypal is taking that from them. PAYPAL. how humiliating.

but...they printed the engine. they f**k printed it? that's probably the most amazing thing in that video

If the Russians are the ones with the capability for spaceflight how are they the ones in danger of losing their clout and of being sidelined?

I don't think private enterprise will ever be able to produce a viable space program

when spaceflight tech becomes commercially available they will be able to manufacture that kind of stuff but that is a long way off.

You do realize that SpaceX has developed their own launch systems and has been flying in space commercially for years now, right? SpaceX is commercial, and they build their own equipment in-house.

The technology is decades old already. SpaceX has been very disruptive in the space launch business...they've actually forced government operators to lower their prices on satellite launches...which is shaping the development of future government launch systems. Arianespace in particular is under huge pressure to lower GTO prices for their next launcher. (And even though Arianespace likes to call itself a commercial space launch company, they depend 100% on ESA and Soviet [yes, Soviet] hardware.)

SpaceX is also making tangible progress towards realistic, practical, reusable launchers...which could potentially push prices much lower still...and frankly, nobody else even comes close to technical parity on that score, no private contractor, and no government space agency.

Because their total contribution is to continue to fly a half century old launcher that doesn't have any capability beyond doing what SpaceX is already doing better and *much* cheaper. And because Russia doesn't have any way to replace even that with a 21st century crewed launcher. There is the PPTS they keep cancelling and restarting...which now they have to go it alone on since the rest of the world has turned their collective back over this Ukraine business. So maybe years down the road we'll see something come out of PPTS. Maybe.

And meanwhile...SpaceX, the little private company, is designing, building, and flying new ships. Its real. PPTS is vaporware.

yeah i was going to say about that. russia's one contribution these days is that they have the ability to ferry people to space, and NASA doesn't. and russia is bitching and moaning about how they are being unfairly punished for their annexation of crimea and are threatening to no longer do the one thing they are temporarily useful for

the only reason spaceX isn't ferrying people to space yet is because NASA changed the guidelines. they changed it so that there has to be a launch escape mechanism. the soyuz sure as shit doesn't have that

by decemeber 2015 spaceX will be ferrying people to the ISS meaning that the russian spaceprogram is worthless entirely. within a few years after that, they will have dragon 2 capsule ready for reusable launches. if all goes according to plan, then the reusable rocketry will make space travel comparatively (to before) dirt cheap. thus commercial enterprises take over and we can all play space engineers for real.

they don't have a viable space program, they have some prototype products they might sell to someone who does have a space program some day

What do you mean by "space program?" Do you mean that they develop spacecraft and fly them in space? Because they do. These are not prototypes, these are regular production launchers already in service. And no, the aim is not to sell products to anyone, but to provide a service, and they are currently, and have been for years now, providing that service.

Upcoming launches for various customers already booked:

You could hire them yourself if you felt the urge.
