Finally some (crumby) video of vertical landing booster....

Video from : old youtu.be

Clearly, this thing works. Just getting the booster coming back down to the ocean on its ass from like 5000 MPH and a parabolic trajectory is awesomesauce enough. Next lets see the thing come down over land.

You thinking what I'm thinking? Next, we build one of these, except without the middle part. Then, have that rocket fly into the middle of it. And out of it. And in. And out. In, out, in, out.

it lands itself. sure you might think it's not that big of a deal; the space shuttle landed like a plane. but it's not just the capsule carrying people, it's every one of the rockets on a ship. normally those are lost which is why the cost of space travel is so prohibitive. elon musk described it as planes that fly once and then discarded. instead, we just pay for the fuel and they are reused many times

for example, nasa's SLS is eyeing 500 million / launch. that's to get to mars. http://www.space.com/17556-giant-nasa-r ... -cost.html

spacex rockets cost about 60 million to launch the falcon 9, and of those costs 0.3% is fuel. they are estimating the cost of the launch at about 2% of the cost of the rocket for fuel and stuff with launch http://www.space.com/21386-spacex-reusa ... -cost.html

so what you're seeing is a way to get to space via rocket at a cost of about 1.2 million dollars as opposed to 500 million dollars, which i think is pretty special

note right now the engines are only thought to last 40 times, but still, 40x reusing a rocket vs just 1 is huge cost savings. and of course the tech will get better. but it will be more than 1.2 because of the capital costs, but still will be huge cost savings
