i think it's fair to say even microsoft acknowledges it sucks. windows 8 wasn't even out of beta before rumors of windows 9 or 10 or whatever the f**k it is were being circulated (and they were true)

Meh. Blaming this on "people hate change" doesn't ring true here at all. Change isn't a good or bad thing, inherently. Good change is good, and bad change is bad. IMO, Windows 8 was a bunch of bad changes. Windows 8.1 was a collection of good changes that corrected some earlier bad ones.
And now that I've been playing with Windows 10 for a couple weeks, I feel that it is mostly good change as well. Personally, I love change. Being into tech pretty much demands the embrace of change. But only if it goes in a positive direction, instead of a total f**k joke, such as the case of Windows 8.
We can try to find objective truths here all we want, but since the problem with Windows 8 is the interface (And its been soundly rejected by most of the PC using public as well as the press covering the segment. Premiums are being paid to "downgrade" new computers to 7.) its seems pretty obvious that its a matter of personal preference.
I don't personally have any problem with 8 in terms of stability. The thing does work in my experience. But that's a pretty minimal expectation, and admittedly I'm forced to deal with only 2 Window 8 machines. It seems to be an excellent tablet OS, though.
Windows 10 will release next year, and just as we were happy to have the superior Windows 7 after dealing with Vista, we'll be happy to have 10 after dealing with 8.
We have to bear in mind, some people really liked Vista, just as some people really seem to like 8. *shrug* To each their own.

The exception being the Surface. That thing is nice. I swear I see more people with it every day.
