manifest destiny

also hedges bets if catastrophe strikes earth, e.g, a K-T event

it's easier to reach escape velocity from mars than earth, and it's farther into the solar system than the moon. for reasons why this is important see the above

do you want american or chinese descendants to be the antagonist in the new Mars Attacks!?

because it's there and because it hold secrets to be revealed and we're nothing if not curious beings

because lots of people want to. if one 10th of one percent of people in the world want to go that's still 6 million

Because humanity, as f**k up as it is, is far too valuable to recklessly and needlessly endanger by leaving all the eggs in one basket. Staying on one planet, and in the far longer term, in one system, is a 100% assured death sentence for the species.

And, for exactly the same reasons humanity has wanted to colonize everywhere else its at right now. Its just one of those things we do.

And all the strategic and economic reasons Galt mentioned.
Ernest Shackleton: "Men wanted for hazardous journey, small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful, honor and recognition in case of success."

outside of the cost, what are the reasons for not tying it?

i think coming from the prospective of this being one fourth of one percent of the national budget or so (nasa does other stuff than just this) how is that excessive amount of money
