Google Glass Explorer Ended

Google Glass Explorer Ended

Postby Southern Dad » Sat Jan 24, 2015 6:39 pm

Last week, Google announced that it’s shuttering its consumer-end operation for Google Glass. As of this week, the product is no longer available for purchase by consumers. For startups using Google Glass to revolutionize healthcare, that poses a problem, right? You’d think.

Not so, insist the entrepreneurs. They claim it’s good news. There’s still a huge opportunity in the enterprise market – that is, selling these funny computerized spectacles to businesses. Google is still working with a select group of ten “Glass Certified Partners,” listed on the company’s Glass at Work page. Four of them (AMA, Augmedix, Pristine, and Wearable Intelligence) are focused at least partly on putting Glass on the faces of physicians or other healthcare workers.

as reported in Forbes

As an early adopter of Google Glass, I was very disappointed to see that the program is being shuttered. While it has had its problems, especially working with iOS devices and not being legal to drive with in my state, I had high hopes that it would be made commercially available, going past the explorer stage. But alas, it is not to be. What will the next wearable be?

Companies need to stop making hardware with zero defined purpose for it. This Google's constant issue where they develop a proof of concept and then just expect everyone to find great uses for it.

Yeah, having cool technology with potential is not the same as developing a useful product.

Google Labs ended the project. it's no longer in experimentation phase: beta is over is what this means, not that it is dead. http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-30831128

i dunno, what the f**k do you want? not build protoypes to find uses for things unless you somehow imagine it all first? shit never even comes out right what is imagined and then what is built, numerous things have to be forsaken. so you end up with something different. it would then have to go through a beta stage to see what worked and what didn't. you're complaining that companies are "putting out products" when google never put this product out, never claimed it was ready. it was a beta program the whole time, so your complaint isn't with them on this, bro

tech shouldn't have "betas". it doesn't work like that. if you build something like google glass and develop no practical applications to go along with it, it will fail. you have to force consumer demand for technological innovations. yes, obviously the prototype was a prototype. now they're going to start making the real version only this time there aren't any actual applications for it. they're in the same exact position; having a product and expecting other people to develop a use for it out of the gate.

The Google Glass Explorer cost $1500. Google had said that when it became commercially available, it would be much less expensive. For me Google Glass hit the wall, when determined to be unlawful to use when driving in Georgia. Gwinnett County writes more tickets for distracted driving than any other county in this state. Actually, more than all other counties in the state.

Honestly, I thought google glass was amazing but after seeing that Black Mirror episode I want nothing to do with it and think it should be outlawed in any civil society.
