economics has advanced before, it'll advance again. capitalism is simply impossible to maintain with the level of technology we're going to see in our lifetimes. i mean, it can try and stick around but you're going to end up with some judge dredd levels of dystopia and massive social upheaval. if the powers that be want to remain in power, they will figure out a way to keep the masses fed, clothed, and housed without packing them in to concentration camps.

One thing that is fairly steady is nothing is done about anything before/until it becomes a crisis.

Currently humanity is in a state of overshoot. In other words our numbers are far greater than the actual carrying capacity of the earth due to our usage of petroluem to fuel factory farming. With the end of cheap energy there will be a large die off.
the situation is comparable to bacteria in a petrie dish, with cheap energy being the growth medium. After the growth medium is consumed the "bacteria" (us) will die off
