I wouldn't say capitalism "won" so much as I would it's just the stage of the process of social development that we are currently in. The fact that "capitalism" has been largely supplanted by mixed market economics shows that economic theory and practice is a matter of an ongoing process of development rather than that of a "winner" or "loser". That is a vast oversimplification of the situation and process.
