So yeah, when regulatory capture is in place the prospect of instituting change to the legal system to account for this serious transgression that was knowingly perpetrated over decades rings a little hollow.

The idea that government needs to be funded to the point that it has the resources necessary to conduct proper oversight is not novel and is ultimately subject to the ideological/opportunistic whims of politicians. Create legislation that effectively categorizes and delineates white collar crimes such that criminal and civil proceedings can be allowed to continue outside of regulatory agencies and the accompanying bureaucratic logjams/regulatory capture and more in the criminal judicial realm where more independence can be found and we might get some real change. Create a two pronged system where if regulatory agencies can't/won't take up the mantle there's a stopgap that can and will. Up to this point corporations are fined/shut down/etc. Nobody at an individual level is held to account anymore and you can hide behind a facade and walk away scotch free.

Of course this relies on us getting these same wolves to write legislation that would probably face fierce pushback by special interests so *shrug.

He is going to jail for four years, with a high chance he will receive additional time when sentenced for his other crimes.

In what way is he escaping suffering or punishment? Will his time in prison be too humane for your likings? Should he received additional time because other cases had judges who were not as lenient?

Everybody is aware that there is a two-tier justice system anywhere that practices adversarial justice. The trick is to bring the bottom tier to where the top is, not the other way around.

Ex is correct. Manafort is not sitting back thinking "...and just according to plan, I got off with only 4 years". He is most likely regretting ever working with Trump, which got enough light shined on him to get him charged for the kind of shit he's been doing for many years before Trump.

But there are 100 other Paul Manafort's in DC who are walking around free today because they happened to never work with Donald Trump. They're no less guilty, and it's not because they'd expect to "only" get 4 years in prison that they do what they do. It's because they don't expect to get caught or prosecuted at all. Make this the kind of thing that you don't just slip under the radar doing and 4 years would be plenty enough deterrence.

On the other hand, Manafort could have been sentenced to 40 years instead of 4, and nothing would change as long as the rest think they'll continue not getting caught.

Manafort up to 7.5 years in prison and got charged with more crimes today. is this punishment enough for you all, or should he have been executed in the public square

It's all financial fraud, misrepresentation, etc etc. Once Trump wins or loses the general election Manafort will be pardoned. Then it'll be on the state of New York apparently.
