I think you're thinking of Vista, with regard to Aero. That's where that whole thing started, and it was years ago. Aero is just standard equipment on Win7, and truly, I never really even really took notice of it, nor do I remember MS making a big deal about since, since it was just tech left over from Vista.
Aero just doesn't matter. The reason they are dropping it in 8 is probably due to some sort of graphical glitch related to running the desktop as though it were an app. When you use Win8, the desktop is something you actually have to activate manually, and you have to leave in order to do something basic, like turn the system off.

Just install 12.04 and do the gnome-fallback. It's a 5 year LTS and you are covered. Don't see what the big deal is.

Why is suspend/hibernate such an important feature? Ubuntu boots in like 10 seconds, just turn it off.
