Besides, all the greatest strides with regard to workers rights have been made within capitalist economies. Historically, those who tried to apply socialism generally ended up with overworked and underpaid workers, and rampant unemployment and inflation.

Actually no, they were not socialists. Goes to the definition of the term. Socialism has no special claim on workers rights. As has already been pointed out, socialism has failed to provide them so far.
