A week ago I would have said not even trump would be that brazen and obvious.

The image of Pence whispering into trump's ear, leading him to the slaughter...just warms my heart. Pence is just a better player at the Game. It would fit...and there is simply no question that it would be justifiable.
I'm betting everyone in the circle who knew trump was going to fire Comey were trying to warn him off. It's just such a stupid thing to do. But trump is still operating under the misapprehension that he appears tough and decisive when he does things like this. He thinks he's demonstrating leadership.
Either that or it's worse than I imagine and he seriously just has zero control over himself. "Comey make trump mad! trump smash Comey!"
He's already facing potential obstruction of justice. Screwing with any investigations at this point is probably no longer grey area but could lead to actual legal problems for himself personally.
To me, the real test for Pence would be a hypothetical impeachment (that I still don't think will happen). Does he pardon trump like a bitchy little 21st century Gerald Ford, or does he man up and let him burn?

Meanwhile from Kasich:
“I don’t like people that say, ‘I told you so,’ but you both know how much pressure, criticism and heat I took because I was the one Republican who would not endorse Donald Trump,” he told CNN’s Dana Bash and Jake Tapper.
“The things that have swirled around this White House are the reasons that caused me not to move forward and support him,” he added. “Part of my concern was not just some of what I saw during that campaign, but also there wasn’t a real grasp on the issues that I think are so important.”
I still think Kasich would have been a decent POTUS. I'd probably be griping with him in office...but at least I wouldn't be disgusted and ashamed as an American.
