Trump supports Israel to redraw Syrian border

1. As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the White House, Donald Trump signed a decree recognising occupied Golan Heights as part of Israel. The document reverses more than a half-century of US policy after Israel seized the strategic land from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed it in 1981.

2. Below are implications of Donald Trump's unilateral move:

(a) Under Donald Trump, international law and treaties are no longer sacrosanct. Shortly after he assumed office, he tore to shreds many international treaties and agreements signed by his predecessor. Despite his scandals and business failures, he seems to be very resilient and enjoys strong support among some Republican Party veterans. At least in the implementation of controversial policies, they have finally found someone behaving like a wild horse in a headlong dash through a minefield regardless of consequences.

In recognising Israel's sovereignty over Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, Trump has acted like a global emperor, constable and judge, redrawing international boundaries according to his whims and fancies. In the future, he could stir up more trouble by meddling in the domestic affairs of other countries and redrawing their borders simply with one stroke of his pen in violations of international law.

(b) The greatest danger to the international order is that all other countries, big and small, will be emboldened to emulate his "Might is Right" policy in tearing up all existing treaties and redrawing borders in defiance of international law. There will be more turbulence and chaos in the world, particularly in the Middle East.

international law didn't imagine a scenario when you defend yourself from 5 other nations trying to destroy you and instead the defender wins territory, international law was dealing with aggressors taking territory. frankly it should be enshrined that this is okay because it means that the aggressors should take notice. syria has also continued to be aggressive, which inernational law says that isreal has a right to secure borders and this territorial acquisition is to protect itself from aggression

what treaty was "shredded" here? isreal gave back sinai immediately after egypt recognized isreal. too bad syria is run by a brutal dictator and refused to do the same huh

west bank is different story. jordan doesn't want it back, and isreal has agreed to negotiate with the Palestinians

i don't think it even matters though because i don't think even Israel asserts sovereignty over golan. they never even annexed it. bibi just wants to make it concrete, that they won't lose golan, and he got trump to play along

Bibi is up for election soon and his numbers are close with his competitor. He's under a slew of corruption charges and members of his cabinet have resigned. Trump did this to support Bibi' re-election bid. It's also pretty obvious that Israel isn't giving it up but that's just a technicality.

Trump probably likes Bibi for rather obvious reasons.

Galt, everyone knows that it was Israel who was the aggressor in '67. When someone closes a key shipping channel and starts massing troops and armor on the border of your parking lot-sized country, you are clearly in the wrong when you do something about it. Stop parroting Zionist talking points.

As for Golan...nobody seems to really give a shit. Syria is busy.
