I don't get why you would wait until elections are just a few months off and then lock the forum.

Which elections are upcoming that require a full forum devoted to it? We've barely had a handful of posts in the past 2 weeks in there.

Well, lots of primaries, including Mayor of New York City. Considering New York's national importance, it merits the election forum staying open.

We'll see. If there's a lot of election talk going on, we can re-open it. But I don't think the mayor of NYC needs his own forum on here.
