How do you define "citing a source?"

It says in the rules that sources must be cited. However, there have been recent citations on the forum of someone just saying "I got it from XYZ." To me, that is not a legal citation. I've read the definition and it said that a direct link to the article must be included. Some forum got sued because someone didn't cite properly.

I think the definition of what citing an article should be added into the rules as an extension of number 4 so everyone knows what it is. I am always very careful to include a direct link with every quote I have to ensure that it's clear that its not me saying it.

I was told that the proper way to cite an article in a public forum is the include the quote in a quote box followed or preceded by a direct link to the article or whatever that is being quoted.

The OP of this thread on this forum has the same idea I do as copyright infringement lawsuits are nothing to laugh at.

This is an online forum, not an academic seminar. Quote boxes are certainly not required, but work well. Quotation marks, however, should be used when quoting someone else at the least. A link is also not required because many times the source is not to be found freely available online.

Again, this is an online forum, not a law review or news publisher. People are not going to be bringing frivolous copyright infringement lawsuits here. Your suggestion that they might is actually for sure something to laugh at.

Copyright infringement is defined as using someone's work without citing it as theirs. It doesn't matter if its on a forum or in a law review.

I reviewed the thread in question and you simply do not have a case DWBH. Indy clearly indicated the portion of his post which was being quoted by placing it in italics after a colon following his clear reference to snopes.

No one in their right mind would try to argue copyright infringement in such a case.

You are out of your mind.

Also, I'm still waiting for you to cite me one single case where an online forum such as this was sued. One single case.

militarytimes or whatever sent cease and desist letters to forums for linking to their material i believe but i would lol from here to mars and back if that actually held up in big boy court.
