Its not like everyone was getting killed daily during the civil wars of Rome, most wars of the ancient world were decided by just one or two decisive battles and the rest of the time was relatively peaceful. The ones who usually got the worst of it were the patricians on the wrong side and massacred soldiers, most ordinary folks would have been okay during those times.

Youre exaggerating, Sula's purges basically involved his real and imagined enemies in the upper class- ordinary citizens had very little to fear unless they publicly sided with the loser of a civil war, very rarely were entire cities put down and that usually occurred between Rome and other factions, not within the empire itself.
