That "only thing" might actually be something meaningful to some people, but I suspect you aren't in that demographic.

I mentioned what I deem his only accomplishment, because I think it's important to all demographics.

I prefer my POTUS to be elected on their ability to lead and the merits of their ideas not because of them being a clean and decent mulatto breaking some "barrier".

Am I the only one that doesn't see that any kinds of barriers were "broken"? Sure, he was the first AA elected as President. I guess that's a symbolic barrier.

But, are blacks being treated more fairly now? Are they being targeted less? Has even a single person said, "Whoa, wait - they can be President?!! Well, I guess I better start actually reading their resumes, then!"

I dunno - it's great, but in the whole scheme of things, it's one of the smaller pieces in a very large puzzle.

Or, put another way - let's say Hillary is elected. People will say, "the glass ceiling is broken!" But, will it be, really? Will 50% of America's upper executives, Board members, etc. suddenly be female? Will they all be paid equally in 6 months?

Let's be fair though, Obama has been incredibly moderate on almost all fronts (internet hyperbole aside), and that's a direct result of him being the first black president. He's already received a shitstorm his entire presidency because of his color and funny name, so can you imagine what would have happened had he even pushed through half of the policies that asshats claim he has? He wouldn't have survived his first term, literally. He's had to be very moderate and even handed purely to open the door for future presidents of color who might be a bit more aggressive. Being the first president of color has forced Obama to walk a double edged sword that he's handled politically quite well (be honest on that). For all the rhetoric sent his way, he's actually been very middle of the road on most policy fronts to try and maintain some balance. I wish he could have been more aggressive, but he paved the way for more radical presidents in the future to pair with the centuries of the occasional white nut bag president we've gotten. I'm sure the next black president will feel comfortable driving whitey nuts on merit rather than speculation.

I seem to remember someone else who had loads of ability, but his symbolism was a little off (had plenty of it, just wasn't exactly about the right things).
